Position Title: Experienced Utility Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Operator

Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Utility HDD Operator to safely and efficiently operate horizontal directional drilling equipment for the installation of underground utilities, including fiber optic, telecommunications, electrical, gas, water, and sewer infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of bore planning, utility locating, drill tracking systems, and jobsite safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate HDD drilling equipment for utility installation projects.
  • Read and interpret utility plans, bore profiles, and construction drawings.
  • Perform pre-job inspections and routine maintenance on drilling equipment and support vehicles.
  • Locate and verify existing underground utilities before drilling operations.
  • Monitor drill path using tracking and locating equipment.
  • Safely perform pilot bores, reaming operations, and product pullbacks.
  • Troubleshoot drilling issues and adjust operations as necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and industry standards.
  • Complete daily reports, equipment inspections, and production documentation.
  • Coordinate with supervisors, utility locators, and crew members to ensure project success.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work site.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience operating HDD equipment in utility construction.
  • Experience with fiber optic, telecommunications, gas, electric, water, or sewer installations.
  • Proficiency with HDD locating and tracking systems.
  • Ability to read construction plans and utility maps.
  • Knowledge of underground utility locating procedures.
  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA safety requirements.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical labor as needed.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience operating Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or similar HDD equipment.
  • CDL Class A or B.
  • Utility locating certification.
  • Experience with mud mixing systems and drilling fluid management.
  • Strong leadership and crew coordination skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and travel when required.
  • Ability to safely work around heavy equipment and active construction sites.
